Initial D: DriftRacer Review

Classification: 12A Director: Andrew Lau, Alan Mak Rating: 1/5

Based on a manga by Shuichi Shigeno, Initial D is the story of Takumi (Chou), a tofu delivery boy who has perfected the technique of ‘drifting’ (putting a car into a controlled slide around bends without losing speed) in order to save time on journeys. Unbeknown to him, his fame as the ‘Akina Racing God’ has spread amongst the Night Kids, a street-racing team eager to discover his identity and take him on.

In theory this should be really good fun – cute actors and lots of adrenalin fuelled testosterone. But its very flat and dull – partly because they always race on the same roads – and marred by dreadful dubbed performances, particularly from Anne Suzuki (Natsuke) and Chapman To as Takumi’s intensely annoying friend, Itsuki.
